Problem with thefts:
The rise in vehicle thefts being recovered burnt is costing everyone who pays for insurance. It’s well documented that vehicle theft is considered a gateway crime. Vehicle thieves are involved in various criminal activities – it all starts with a stolen vehicle. The first step of violent crime and high-impact crime begins with stolen vehicles. Stolen vehicles are used in crimes such as shootings, robberies, homicides, drug dealing and insurance fraud.
Societal attitudes towards vehicle theft is in general believed to be a victimless crime and with diminishing budgets, law enforcement are being directed to prioritizing violent crimes. Vehicle theft is therefore, deemed an insurance problem. An insurers only defense is to pay the claim and pass on the cost to the consumer through inflated premiums.
Understanding theft, who steals vehicles and why. Identifying and documentation of critical information to assist with confirming the legitimacy of the theft (Mechanical condition, external security features such as locks and glass, then internal security features such as steering columns, keys, ignitions and passive anti-theft systems PATS). Where is this information, the recognition of the information and the examination of evidence to qualify the facts provided to local law enforcement and the insurer then, putting it all together will help slow down this escalating problem.
At IGNISOC we have the knowledge and skill to assist with this problem by validating the theft, whether the vehicle is burnt or not. When the vehicle is recovered burnt, this process of determining the legitimacy of the theft becomes more important. When the vehicle is recovered burnt, the way the vehicle is burnt, is less important than the legitimacy of the theft.
